What is a Certified Nurse Midwife?

The word midwife means “with woman”. The care philosophy of a midwife focuses on the specific needs of a woman, emphasizes education and empowerment in a woman’s health care, and minimizes unnecessary intervention. Midwives approach adolescent changes, pregnancy, birth and menopause as natural life transitions.
In Oregon, midwives are recognized as independent healthcare practitioners, have hospital admitting privileges, are licensed to prescribe medications and consult with other physicians. Our midwives work very closely in collaboration with the physicians of Women’s Health Today when situations arise.
